The well-known hymn, ‘Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus, starts with the lines:
“‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
And to take Him at His word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, ‘Thus saith the Lord.’
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus
O for grace to trust Him more!”
This song has been going through my brain a lot this month. Thankfully, I was able to see my primary care physician for some blood work and get a peek at the baby via an ultrasound, but I have yet to see an OB. In our area, all of the offices are scheduling several months out for new pregnancies. It is rare for someone to get an appointment in their first trimester unless they are experiencing issues. Thankfully, from what I know, all seems well this time around. There are days when I can be excited and planning for the future. There are other days when I feel like I’m just waiting to hear bad news. I know I need to trust the Lord for the future. He holds life and death in His hands. None of us know our length of days, and we should rejoice in each day that he gives us. I need to stop worrying and start trusting. I need to enjoy each day that I am given.
Matthew 6:25-34 tells us “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?... But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Worry and anxiety only make things worse. Doctors can confirm that worry, anxiety, and stress negatively impact our health. So, how do we stop worrying? This scripture gives us the answer. We need to “seek first the kingdom of God.” We need to spend time in prayer and reading God’s word. Scripture reminds me that God is sovereign and in control of all things. It reminds me that nothing happens outside the will of God. I don’t have to worry and stress about my baby, because every day of their life is in God’s hands. I can do all the best I can for my health and the health of my family, but all our days are in God’s hands. When I am starting to worry, I start reading God’s word or reciting scripture or a song to remind myself that there is no help in worrying.
My family has also been a huge help and reminder to keep me focused on today and the joy in anticipating a baby. We have been keeping busy visiting State Parks. We spent our last weekend of August in the mountains near Boone, NC. We were able to visit four state parks and had a great time together. We saw multiple deer, including two mommas with twins. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery and driving around the mountains together. We may have gotten lost trying to find the entrance for Grandfather Mountain (that wasn’t the privately owned commercial property with an entrance fee), but we had a great time driving around and pointing out the amazing views. My boys are also super excited for their newest sibling. They are constantly asking me what size the baby is, what the baby can do, and if the baby can hear them yet. Their enthusiasm and excitement are quite contagious.
My worry has prompted me to work more towards my goals for this year. More time in God’s Word, more time outside, more time with my family, and more time focusing on the blessings God has given. God continues to be gracious and bless our family in so many ways. I will continue to focus on praising God for what I have rather than worrying about what might happen in the future. I don’t know, and I can’t know the future…so I must focus on the present and what I can do in it.
Another verse of the song ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus says:
“Yes, ‘tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace.”
My worry is sin. I must confess my lack of faith and trust in the Lord. I must stop focusing so much on myself, my wants, my worries, and confess that sin as well. In Jesus I can find “life and rest, and joy and peace.” I would encourage you to do the same. Whatever cares or worries you are facing, take them to Jesus. Trust that the Lord has everything under His sovereign control. Focus on God’s Word, prayer, and the blessings of today. Let the Lord be your strength and peace in difficult and disturbing times. Trust the Lord to do what is best for you (even if it’s not what you want). May we all have the grace to trust Him more!
